Longji Mountain (the Dragon's Backbone Mountain) is a high mountain and its peak, Mao Er peak, is the highest in South China. With its foundation such a high mountain, how can the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces not be winding and boundless! The total area of the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces is 1014 hectares, and the whole terrace is built on the hillside with attitude from 300 meters to 1100 meters. Layers of terraces swirl and climb up from the river valley of torrent to the top of the hills where there are a lot of clouds. If you look toward the horizon, you would see that blocks of terraces are found to hand in hand, from the steep cliff to the end of the lush trees. Everywhere there is mud, there are cultivated terraces. Specifically speaking, the core of the terraces is a big land with area of two or three square kilometers.

The Longji Dragon's Back Rice Terraces have an almost mystical quality to them. As visitors climb walk along the mountain paths, each view that opens up is more beautiful than the one before. The terraced fields are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, the highest part being 880 m in elevation while the lowest part is 380 m. The coiling line that starts from the mountain foot up to the mountain top divides the mountain into layers of water glittering in the sun in spring, layers of green rice shoots in summer, layers of golden rice in fall, and layers of silvery frost in winter. The terraced fields were mostly built during the Ming Dynasty, about 500 years ago.

Rice is still farmed here today and the Longji Rice Terraces are home to some of China’s ethnic minorities. The village of Ping’An, which is essentially the base camp for exploring the terraces, has a 600 year history and is populated by the Zhuang people. A few hours walk away is Dazhai, a town populated by the Yao ethnic minority. The Yao women are famous for growing extremely long hair. Even in Ping’An they will find you and offer to let their hair down to its full length for a few RMB.

The island has more than 50 areas containing cultural relics and places of historical interest, such as the General Mansion of Army and the Changshanwei Emplacement, both of which have been recently restored to their former glories. The ancient tower was rebuilt in 1880, showing a structure quite similar to the present one. Between March 1983 and April 1984, it was thoroughly renovated in the former style. In Jan. 1988, it was assessed as a key historic building under state protection. The present tower, a purely wooden structure, rises 21.35 meters high from the marble terrace. It is supported mainly by four nanmu columns, each 1.43 meters in circumference. Twelve minor pillars are set on the tie-beams that are placed midway across the major columns in the depth-wise direction. The compartment between the pillars forms the inner part of the second floor, while 20 other pillars support the four up-turning eaves, making a circling veranda fenced by balustrades and partitioned from the inner hall with latticed windows. On the third floor, corbels and brackets are used to set the eaves out from the roof in an' overhang so that more sunlight is obtained and more beauty is added to the whole structure. Remarkably, the roof, with four cursive hips and a tiny decorative dagoba in the center, is shaped like an ancient military helmet. This style is rarely seen in Chinese architecture. Besides, the tri-eaved roof is covered with golden glazed tiles, making the tower more splendid and magnificent. The whole structure, delicate in design and exquisite in decoration, is a representative work of ancient architeeture. No doubt, it is a perfect combination of aestheticism, mechanics, technology as well as architecture. By the way, no iron nail is used in the whole structure.
